If you are new here, check out my favorite DIY manicure. That is my go-to for a long-lasting and quick mani! Otherwise, I prefer to use classic nail polish in timeless colors. This image was featured on PPF several years ago for readers looking for the best drugstore nail polish colors! I wanted to bring it forward and share these dupes to the popular Essie shades!

Best Drugstore Nail Polish

A few things that make these stand apart from other drugstore brands:

– Color: It is almost impossible to tell the difference between the Essie shade and the other brands.

– Reviews: These are reputable and iconic nail polish brands. Reviews great for each (Sally Hansen has some of my favorite polishes)

– Quick Dry Time: The quick dry options make life so much easier. If you are in a hurry, these dry very fast compared to other polishes.

Best Essie Shades to Dupe

Here are some of the most flattering Essie colors and very similar shade dupes you can find at most drugstores.

drugstore nail polish dupes

Essie Blanc // China Glaze White on White
Essie Fiji // Sally Hansen Tickled Pink
Essie Sound Check You Out // Sally Hansen Slick Slate
Essie Angora Cardi // Sally Hansen Mauve Over
Essie Flying Solo // Sally Hansen Peachy Breeze
Essie Not Red-y for Bed // Sinful Colors Go Go Girl

Budget Friendly Drugstore Top Coat

If you want to add another layer of protection to your base color, I recommend this instant dry topcoat. One of the best drugstore nail polish top coats out there, in my opinion. This is a secret weapon to making color last a bit longer! Regardless of nail polish brand, a top coat will give polish more longevity.

Usually here on Penny Pincher Fashion, I prefer to share items that are under $100, unless I feel it is a worthy investment. Today, though, I want to share a few splurge worthy items that make great lux gifts. But wait.. most (not all) of these are still under $200! Even better, some of the retailers offer promo codes this time of year and offer discount codes if you subscribe to their emails! Be sure to look for these promos before purchasing! This is your chance to really spoil that special someone (or yourself)!  So, if you are in the market for a high-end, one-time, purchase… here is a great gift guide for the luxury lover!

If these gifts are out of your budget, please use this guide to inspire your gift shopping. For example, you can pick any one item below, then go to your designer/retailer of choice, and purchase a similar type of item from them. Easy as that! Also, for more affordable gift ideas, check out this post!

All of the items I’ve selected below are long lasting, beautiful, high quality pieces she will love to open and be able to enjoy for a long time. I hope you enjoy this list as much as I do.

Affiliate links may be used in this post. To learn more, please review our full disclosure statement below (on mobile) or to the right (on desktop). Also, as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Thanks for your support!

1. Cozy loungewear set: Knit pullover , knit sweatpants  , knit short  ,  knit robe – The SKIMS line is all the rage this year. She will love any or all of these pieces. The pants or shorts paired with the cozy knit top would make beautiful gift. The knit pullover can even be worn with jeans or leggings for an everyday look. Everything, except the pant, is under $100.

2. Dior Makeup SetBrush  //  Primer  //  Foundation  – This Dior primer, foundation, and brush combination will help her achieve the flawless airbrush look. For this being Dior, the price isn’t terrible. Let’s start with the brush, it is $50. This brush has so many great reviews and could be used with other makeup brands. The primer, $36, is a great option to pair with the brush as a gift because you don’t have to worry about getting the shade right. The texture of this primer is so incredibly smooth and helps to keep makeup on longer. Finally, the foundation, $62, comes in 24 shades! I watched a youtube video of this being applied and I was floored. Just go read through the reviews and you’ll see why so many people love this product! Honestly, Sephora has a great return/exchange program, if you buy the wrong shade they will help you correct it, just try and save your gift receipt. Each item is under $70… Buy all 3 for around $150!

3. Watch:  Standard Watch or smart watch band – If she likes to wear watches then this is the gift to get. A watch is a nice gift because it will get used a lot and serves a purpose. Unlike other gifts, this is one you know will get used. This Kate Spade Apple watch band comes in several colors and is perfect for everyday wear or dressing up for the office. This standard watch in Black or white  is sure to be a favorite. I love the simplicity of the band and gold accents. Both options linked were under $150 at the time of writing this.

4. Silk pillowcase and mask set – Silk is basically the first fabric that comes to mind when I think of the word luxury. This particular set is labeled for travel, but it could also be used for everyday, check out this post where I detail all of the amazing skin and hair benefits that comes from sleeping on a silk pillow case. She is sure to love this thoughtful gift. Buy the set for just under $130.

5. Cashmere SweaterSecond luxury fabric would have to be cashmere. I bought a cashmere sweater nearly 10 years ago and still wear it to this day. The fabric is super soft, lovely, and holds up so much better than other sweaters. I recently found this company, Gentle Herd, that specializes in cashmere & wool. Their prices are great (some cashmere sweaters under $100) and they are transparent about their pricing and quality. When writing this post there was a promo code, GHGIFT, for 25% off. They also offer 10% off right now for subscribing to emails.

6. Luxury Makeup Bag – This is another gift that is splurge worthy because us ladies can never have too many of these. I use several of these currently. I like to use cosmetic bags at home for beauty storage: makeup, brushes, nail polish, nail tools, small creams. They’re so handy and helps keep everything organized. I also have a small bag in my purse for touch up makeup, chapstick, & hand sani. It’s always nice to have a few extra of these on hand for travel. She’ll love to have one of these designer bas to throw in her purse. Louis Vuitton, Gucci , Gucci  , Dolce & Gabanna  , Burberry  , Prada These high-end designer bags were each under $500 at the time of writing this post.

7. Designer Bag – If you are able to splurge a lot more, then a designer bag may be your go to gift. Gifts like this are a one size fits all and will last for several years. There are so many cute bags out there I could not pick just one to share! Tory Burch Leather Camera Bag $298  , Stella McCartney Hobo on sale under $500 , Tory Burch Shoulder Bag $503  , Tory Burch Leather Logo $528, Tory Burch Cream (shown above) $348

8. Chanel Perfume travel set No. 5  //  No. 5 L’EAU  :This brand screams luxury. I know perfume can be a tricky gift but this scent is both iconic and loved by so many. If you read reviews several women mention using No. 5 for 40+ year which is a great testimony. Now this set is a great gift because it is the perfect size for slipping into a purse or taking when travelling. It comes with a refillable container that can be used again and again. It could technically be refilled with any fragrance which is great, especially if she uses several scents! A luxurious gift that keeps giving! Price ranges from $98-$113 for the set.

9. Designer Sandal – Let’s be honest, us ladies love a beautiful designer look. Maybe the person you’re buying for would never commit to buying these for herself. IF that’s the case she will love opening this gift. I’m tagging a few options: Sam Edelman Logo iconic slide $100  , Sam Edelman platform woven slide $120 , and Tory Burch Logo Slide $228.

10. Kate Spade Sunglasses – Classic black sunglasses by a well-loved designer. These are at Nordstrom for $140.

11. Mini Sensor mirror – This is the ultimate in compact makeup mirrors! For $130 this make up mirror comes with a USB cable, cleaning cloth, and travel case. What I love about this mirror is that it is rechargeable making it a great cordless option. The mirror senses your face and automatically illuminates for a touch free experience. Another great feature is that it folds up nicely, making it easy to store and take when travelling. Currently priced at $130.

12. Drybar Hair Care set Drybar is another highly rated brand for hair styling products. You get so much for you money (currently priced at $200) with this set. One standard curling iron from Drybar will cost you about $150, so this is a great find! This comes with three interchangeable styling wands, so she will be able to achieve her desired look, easily, with just one tool. Also comes with 1.7 oz charcoal shampoo, 1.7 oz conditioner, heat protect mist, dry shampoo, AND finishing spray!

Bonus super splurge. If the lady you are shopping for is into high fashion, she will adore this gift. Nearly every woman can use a classic black pump for their wardrobe, so why not invest in a Louboutin with the iconic red bottoms. I’m in awe of these. If you are able to buy these, it is a great investment piece for any wardrobe especially if she works in a job that allows her to wear this type of shoe regularly. (The two boots shown below are from Saks, as of writing this post they had a promo code that could be applied for savings. Also check and see if these sites offers discount codes for subscribing to their email!)

These are kitten heel pumps which is much more realistic that the usual Louboutin heel height – $670

If she would rather have a boot, here is a great ankle boot that can be dressed up or down – $1,095

Another great designer boot I would recommend is Cole Hann – $280

Did you know that the average person will spend about one third of their life sleeping? That is a lot of sleep! It is also likely that most of that sleep is spent on a standard cotton pillowcase. For me, I never thought twice about my cotton pillowcase, until now! Today I want to share the top benefits of a silk pillowcase and why I switched.

Affiliate links may be used in this post. To learn more, please review our full disclosure statement below (on mobile) or to the right (on desktop). Thanks for your support!

The harsh truth

While cotton is comfortable and soft, silk is much smoother and luxurious! I never associated cotton with the word “abrasive” before, but now I do! Stop and think about the actual feel and texture of cotton and silk. They are very different, right?!

Laying on a cotton pillowcase all night, every night is so much more abrasive to your delicate facial skin and hair, as compared to silk. This abrasiveness enhances creases on our face each night (talking to you, side sleepers), potentially leading to long-term wrinkles. No, thanks! Not to mention the impact on our hair, such as frizz, breakage, and tangles. Also, if you find yourself waking up to dry skin in the morning, it could be because of your cotton pillowcase.

Switching to a silk pillowcase can help solve some, or maybe all, of these problems!

Problem Solved!

When I started researching silk pillowcases, I was sold on the potential anti-aging effects that could happen WHILE I SLEEP. Call me lazy, but there is zero effort involved in this simple beauty routine hack, and I am all for it!

All I have to do is sleep on this super silky pillow and my hair and skin will look better? Yes, please!!

Cost effective addition to your skin and hair routine

Now, I know what you’re thinking, silk is expensive! So let’s talk about the cost right now. The highest quality silk pillowcases are not cheap by any means, they are an investment. However, they will last a long time while providing many benefits.

To bring some more perspective to the cost… Think about how much you spend on that fancy designer anti-wrinkle cream. Or how about that teeny tiny jar of hair oil that is “worth every penny”. Both have to be replaced every few months. There’s nothing wrong with these things, we all have these items and LOVE them because of the long term benefits they bring to our skin and hair. Same concept should be applied to your pillowcase. What I love most is that this one-time purchase is beneficial to both skin and hair. Getting a lot of bang for your buck!

Skin benefits

  • Hypoallergenic – Endorsed by dermatologists, silk is 100% natural & hypoallergenic material, making it suitable for most skin types, even some sensitive skin.
  • Enhances current skincare routine – Silk is less absorbent than cotton, therefore with a silk pillowcase (or eye mask), your face creams will not absorb into the fabric as it would with cotton.
  • Hydrating – Skin will retain more of its natural oils that would otherwise be absorbed by other fabrics.
  • Anti-crease – This is a big one for me since I am a side sleeper!! The texture of silk causes less friction between your skin and fabric, thus helping to reduces creases on your skin overnight.

Hair Benefits

  • Smoother locks – Tossing and turning on cotton is harsh for your hair! Silk’s smooth texture can lead to less breakage and prevent damage.
  • Less frizz – Sleeping on silk will promote healthier looking hair and help tame the extra frizz that can pop up overnight.
  • Promotes shine – Helps hair retain more natural oils, just like skin, that would otherwise be absorbed by other fabric.
  • While we are talking about hair, you should also consider switching to silk scrunchies. Not only are they cute, but they’re also better for your hair.
    • Think about your standard hair tie that’s been around for years. It tugs and pulls on your precious hair, creates creases, and promotes breakoffs. Silk scrunchies are gentler and have all the great hair benefits listed above. Here are two great options: Large Silk scrunchie and Small Silk scrunchie 6 pack $40

Added Benefit

  • Better sleep. Silk has natural temperature-regulating properties that give it the ability to both cool and warm body temp. Silk is truly an all-climate fabric. They keep you comfortably cool in the summer and cozy warm in the winter.

What to look for in a silk pillowcase

  • 100% Mulberry Silk – this is the highest quality.
    • Mulberry comes from a silkworm, whose diet is exclusively leaves from a Mulberry tree. Mulberry silk threads are said to be some of the best on Earth; being smoother and stronger than others.
  • Grade
    • Silk quality is graded A, B, or C. Grade A is the highest quality and is also very pure. The grade scale is further broken down by numbers 2-6. 6 being the best. Therefore, silk that has a grade of 6A will be the highest and finest quality.
  • Momme
    • No thread count is involved with silk, rather, it is measured by Momme. The highest Momme is a 30, which is thicker yarn and tighter weave, providing an ultra-luxurious silk. I’ve read that anything with a momme of 19 or higher is preferred for quality.
    • If a product does not list the Momme, be cautious, it may not be real silk!
  • Zippered or Envelope Closure
    • to ensure the case stays on the pillow throughout the night
  • Size
    • confirm the case will fit your pillow. Most pillows are standard but some are queen or king (we have nectar pillows and I ordered queen size)
      • King size : 20”x36”
      • Queen: 20”x30”
      • Standard: 20”x26”

Cleaning your silk pillowcase

  • Always follow the care instructions listed on your pillowcase
  • Generally speaking, silk should be hand washed in cold water and dried flat
  • Where machine washing is allowed (check the product tag for care instructions)

Summary of Silk Pillowcase Benefits

  1. Hypoallergenic
  2. Hydrating for skin and Hair
  3. Prevents split ends & tangles
  4. Prevents wrinkles
  5. Temperature Regulating

Recommendations

  1. Budget Friendly – Amazon Basics 19 Momme, machine washable, 100% Mulberry Silk
  2. What I bought: Blissy Silk Pillowcase – 22-momme Grade 6A, machine washable (40% off at the time of writing this)
  3. Another great option: Fishers Finery 25Momme single case $50
  4. 30 Momme: Fishers Finery 30 Momme 2 pack $120

Having my nails done just makes me feel a little more put together. I’m sure you feel the same. I always do mine at home, but I know many women who are at the salon every 2-3 weeks getting a fresh manicure. Whichever way you go, there are downfalls to each option. Today I am sharing what I think is the prettiest DIY manicure.

Common manicure problems

  • Not enough time in the day
  • Long dry time
  • Smudges/chips soon after they are done
  • Expensive (if going to the salon frequently)

These are just some problems many people face when it comes to a simple manicure.

My favorite solution.. nail strips

How pretty are the ones shown above for fall!

Does anyone really know the official name for these?? Appliques, strips, whatever you call them! Loving these right now!!

I found these nail strips about a year ago. They provide salon quality manicure at home and they have A LOT to offer:

  • Beautiful
  • No dry time
  • Affordable
  • High quality

Yesssss, please. For under $10 you can get gel quality nails that last up to 14 days. I was even able to get two manicures out of this one pack. Do I need to say anything else?

My favorite brand is Incoco as they have a little bit of stretch to them for application, which makes it a better fit to your nail shape. But, honestly, the Dashing Diva brand is also amazing. I’m wearing this brand now and I only had one nail within that set that didn’t fit just right, but you have to be looking super close to see any flaw in that one. I have gotten so many compliments. Scroll to the bottom for product links so you can have the prettiest DIY manicure too!

Anytime I can get something that I use regularly for less, I jump at the chance (even if it means buying products in advance/stocking up).  They have so many product offerings on their site that it can feel a little overwhelming when ordering during an event like this.  So, to simplify things, I’m only sharing the things that I use every day and love – these all have my seal of approval!  Sadly, The Ordinary products are excluded from the promo, but if you’ve been wanting to try them out, you can order & get them shipped for free – my favorites here & here.

MAKEUP

Sephora Spring Sale Makeup Picks

Supergoop GlowScreen SPF40
This is my holy grail sunscreen & I honestly can’t imagine ever using anything else.  On days I’m not doing my makeup, I layer this over my moisturizer and it gives light coverage + a dewy glow, all while protecting my skin from the sun.

It Cosmetics Oil-Free Primer
Hands down the best primer, especially for the warm weather months!  It has a special “gripping” technology so it really adheres to your makeup so it won’t budge, even in the heat.  I tend to get a little shiny through my T-zone throughout the day and this really helps combat that too.

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter
Another holy grail product I will never be without!  I layer this under my CC cream or I’ll wear it over my sunscreen on no-makeup days for a little added coverage.  I use the shade Light/Medium.

It Cosmetics CC+ Cream
I love that this has SPF50 built into it, so I don’t have to layer sunscreen underneath.  I wear the shade Medium in the summer months & Light/Medium in the winter.  I’d call this a medium to full coverage foundation with a luminous (not matte) finish.

It Cosmetics Waterproof Under Eye Concealer
I’ve gone back and forth with my concealer in the last couple of years, but I keep coming back to this one.  I think this has less of a tendency to crease (verses the Tarte Shape Tape) – as long as you apply it right and blend well.  A little goes a long way so I actually just buy the mini size because it lasts so long for me.  I wear Light Natural (full size version here).

Hourglass Translucent Setting Powder
This comes in a mini size so you can try it out before buying the larger version.  But, trust me – it’s the best setting powder I’ve tried (this one is a close runner-up though).  It is such a soft, fine powder that melts into your skin without looking cakey.

Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder
I only use this to set my undereye concealer and since a little goes a long way, this is one of those products that will last me for well over a year.  I wear the Fair/Medium.

Westman Atelier Highlighter Stick
This is a new-to-me clean beauty brand that I decided to try after hearing rave reviews from other bloggers & influencers.  I was pleasantly surprised by this product – I think it’s the most natural-looking highlighter I’ve ever used.  I ordered in Nectar and instantly fell in love with the easy application (I barely even needed to blend with my fingertips!) and the subtle lit-from-within look it gave me…and it lasted all day!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz
The only brow pencil I will use – the super fine tip creates hair-like strokes that look natural and help fill in any sparse areas. I use a mix of both Taupe and Soft Brown.

Hourglass Ambient Bronzer
I bought the mini size of this in Luminous Bronze Light during last year’s sale and I still haven’t used it all.  This blends so well & gives you such a pretty natural warm glow without being overly sparkly.

NARS Blush
A cult classic & one of my go-to products for years.  Deepthroat & Sin are my favorite shades, but Orgasm is well-known for being universally flattering on all skin tones.  If you’re like me & don’t use a lot of blush, save yourself some money & just buy the mini version!

HAIR

Sephora Spring Sale Hair Picks

Living Proof Dry Shampoo
My ride-or-die favorite – I always order multiple bottles of this whenever it’s on sale because I use it SO often!  It doesn’t create build-up and actually makes hair softer, while absorbing oils.  I like to spray it at the roots before bed and also before I workout as an extra preventative measure.

Living Proof Heat Styling Spray
When I blow-dry and curl my hair, I always spray this on liberally beforehand.  It protects up to 450 degrees (though, for the record, you should try to keep your tools around the 300 range for the health of your hair).  I like that it comes out in a fine mist so it’s a lot easier to get good coverage than a pump spray bottle.

DevaCurl Coconut Curl SuperCream
In an effort to minimize heat damage, I’ve been letting my hair air dry and wearing it curly as much as possible.  This cream is the best for giving my curls definition without making them crunchy + the tropical smell is heavenly.  This also comes in a mini size so you can try it out first.

Olaplex Bonding Oil
My hairstylist recommended this and I’ve been using it since January to help keep moisture in my hair.  A little goes a long way, so I only need a few drops – then I rub my palms together & apply via the “praying hands” method, focusing on mid-shaft to ends.  I use this on wet hair right out of the shower and again on my day 2 dry hair.

Olaplex Intense Moisture Mask
I personally think some of the Olaplex products are a little over-hyped, but if you’re only going to order one, this is it!  I try to do a deep conditioning hair mask once a week and this is truly transformative.  Even my mom who has fine, thin hair loved it, so I think it will work well for all hair types.  Also love that it comes with a pump dispenser – so much easier to apply!

SKINCARE

Sephora Spring Sale Skincare Picks

Farmacy Brightening & Hydrating Sheet Masks
I love having these in my beauty cabinet for when my skin needs an extra little boost.  I typically do these on Sunday mornings when I have time to let it sit for 20 minutes and really sink in.  I’ve tried lots of different sheet masks over the years and these are still my favorites.

Farmacy Hyaluronic Acid Serum
I talked about this in my WILN post last week (here) – it really does what it says and not only hydrates, but gives skin a plump look without making you overly greasy.  It also layers beautifully under moisturizer and sunscreen without pilling.

St. Tropez Bronzing Water Face Mist
This is the easiest self-tanner you’ll ever use!  Just spritz on your face (no rubbing in needed) and you’ll get an evenly distributed mist that develops into a warm glowing tan in a few hours.  One word of caution if you are a bright blonde: make sure your hair is pulled away from your face and/or put up in a ponytail before using, as it can absorb into hair & color light strands.

Kate Somerville Exfoliating Treatment
Truth be told, this microdermabrasion scrub is my top pick, but since it’s a little bit pricier, I like to have this one as a back up.  It’s a glycolic and lactic acid base so it’s great for exfoliating and minimizing pores.  This is well-known as being “Hollywood’s 2-minute facial” because so many celebrities swear by it before events/award shows.

GrandeLash Lash Growth Serum
My favorite lash serum that actually produces results!  This doesn’t irritate my sensitive eyes and it’s easy to put on before bed each night (I keep mine on the nightstand so I don’t forget!).  I’ve linked to the mini version, which will last you approximately 6 weeks or you can get the full size version here.

Farmacy Brightening Eye Cream
I’ve been using this eye cream for over a year and it’s the only one I’ve found that has actually helped my dark circles.  It’s a blend of Vitamin C & Acerola Cherry that’s equal parts moisturizing and brightening.  I use it both morning & night.

Peace Out Microneedling Brightening Dots
I almost wish I hadn’t discovered these because now I’m hooked and will forever be repurchasing.  These are similar to those blemish patches that you can put over breakouts – except these actually fade stubborn dark spots!  You have to be consistent with them to really see a difference, but I was blown away by how well they work.  These patches have little microneedle spikes on them so the product can really penetrate beneath the skin.  Now that I’ve used these, I’m anxious to try their anti-wrinkle retinol patches to see if they’re just as good.

how to care for aging skin

I don’t know about you, but I feel like skincare can be so confusing!  There are constantly new products being introduced to market + it’s hard to know which ones you actually need and what order to use them all in.  And it’s only further complicated by the fact that there are certain things you can combine & layer and certain things you can’t.

I’ve been testing and experimenting for what seems like forever and I’ve finally landed on products that work well for me.  My skin has never been clearer & I’m so pleased with the improvement I’ve seen in luminosity, evenness and moisture.  So I thought I would share my updated favorites with you today, along with my tips for how to layer skincare products  – I hope this helps you to create your own morning & nighttime routine!AM/PM Skincare Routine

DAYTIME SKINCARE

This oil-free foaming cleanser is a new discovery for me – I loved it so much that I immediately tossed out what I was using previously!  I only need a pea-sized amount to create a nice lather, so this tube will last me quite a while.  This is ideal for combination skin and it’s a clean beauty brand (I also love their eye cream & sheet masks).

Vitamin C is something everyone should be using!  So, if you don’t already have it in your daily routine, I highly recommend this serum.  I’ve talked about it before, but it has helped me so much with hyperpigmentation, evening out my skintone and brightening my complexion.  I just found it even cheaper here & here (limited quantities available).

I saw another influencer mention this hyaluronic acid on her Instagram Stories so I ordered it to try and wow!  It has made such a difference in helping my skin stay hydrated throughout the day (without breaking me out).  Hyaluronic acid, by nature, is a humectant, which means it draws water to the skin – so it has a plumping effect that really creates a nice natural dewy glow.  One pump is all I need to cover my whole face – be sure to let it absorb completely before layering another product on top!

If your skin is on the drier side, you can use both a facial oil & moisturizer.  I personally find that I usually only need one or the other & I like the light consistency of this oil for daytime because it layers so well under my sunscreen & doesn’t feel too heavy.  A little bit of this goes a long way – I only use a few drops, rub my palms together and then press it into the skin.

This broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of my holy grail products that I cannot live without!  It has a pearlescent finish that is perfect for wearing alone on no-makeup days and layers beautifully under any CC cream or foundation.  Regardless of what brand you prefer, sunscreen is something you should be wearing every single day – even if it’s winter, even if it’s cloudy, even if you’re only going outdoors for a short period of time.  Do not skip this step!!

EVENING SKINCARE (M/W/F)

I hate how expensive this exfoliating scrub is so I try to buy multiples anytime it goes on sale.  It really is the best I’ve tried so I try to make it last as long as I possibly can.  If your skin is more sensitive and requires a gentler scrub, this one is probably my second favorite (and much more affordable).

This Niacinamide is a new-to-me product that I just added to my routine about a month ago.  Also known as Vitamin B3, this powerhouse ingredient helps minimize pores, balance oil production to decrease breakouts & can lighten skin over time (great for dark spots or acne scars).  I use two drops and gently press it into the skin before moving onto my next product application.

My skin is really sensitive to retinol – it has been such a STRUGGLE for me to find one that doesn’t cause severe irritation!  I’m currently attempting to work my way up to this maximum strength cream…so I’m using it once a week and using this gentler version on all the other days (the only one I’ve found that my skin doesn’t react negatively to).

EVENING SKINCARE (T/Th/Sa)

Microneedling is something I started doing when I was in my mid-thirties and I can’t say enough good things about it.  It’s a quick extra step that is so worth adding into your weekly routine if you aren’t already doing it.  Microneedling stimulates collagen production, reduces the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles and helps topical products absorb better into the skin (making them more effective).  After cleansing, I grab my dermaroller (I like a .25mm, but you can also use .2mm or .3mm, but never go over .3mm for your face) & apply gentle pressure to roll the microneedler over my skin vertically, horizontally & diagonally.  You want to do 2-4 passes vertically, followed by another 2-4 rolls horizontally on the same section before moving onto another area.  As soon as I’m done, I disinfect my roller in alcohol for 3-5 minutes and then let it air dry. It’s really important to replace your roller regularly because the needles will eventually get dull (I swap mine out once a month).

I honestly wasn’t using peptides until my dermatologist mentioned it to me.  She explained that peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as building blocks of proteins such as collagen, elastin & keratin.  Without peptides, the skin is less intact, which can lead to a loss of firmness, the appearance of wrinkles & a change in texture.  Peptides basically tell your skin to create more collagen, so by applying them directly to the skin, you’re telling your body it needs to make more collagen.  I’m already taking a liquid collagen supplement daily, but I figured it couldn’t hurt!  She recommended this one and, after a few weeks, I’ve definitely noticed a change in the smoothness of my skin.  I only use 2-3 droplets and press it into the skin – fair warning: the smell isn’t great, but it dissipates once it’s fully absorbed.

Since outfit posts aren’t happening right now (due to the severe winter weather & our lack of power), I decided to bring back this popular series from 2019!  This is an easy way for me to share a mix of things that I’m using, craving and loving at the moment.  This month’s round-up includes some beauty products I’ve been impressed with, a popular spring color that’s popping up everywhere, the jewelry I can’t get enough of + a healthy approach to food and body image.  Read on to discover my favorites…

SHADES OF GREEN

I know I’ve already shared about my affinity for soft pastels, but for some reason, this particular shade of green is really speaking to me lately.  It’s more sage than mint, which I personally think is more versatile and wearable for most skin tones.  Here are a few favorites that I’ve got my eye on now – see more of my top picks in the scrolling bar at the bottom of this post!

shades of green

Square Neck Top //  Satin Scarf Handbag // Buttoned Cardigan
Crossbody Bag // Mockneck Sweater // Croc Embossed Satchel
Square Neck Sundress // Midi Slip Skirt // Twist-Front Sweatshirt

SELF-TANNING SERUM

St Tropez Tanning DropsLast week, I noticed that my skin was looking pretty dull (and dead-of-winterish pale), so I rubbed a couple drops of this in with my daily moisturizer and, within a few hours, I had a subtle sunkissed glow, which was just the pick-me-up I was needing!  The facial self-tanner I’ve used in the past was sadly discontinued, so I was happy to discover this as a replacement.  I like that it doesn’t dry my skin out, that it has a natural look to it and there isn’t a strong scent that’s so often present with self-tanners.

INTUITIVE EATING

intuitive eating

One of my personal goals for 2021 is to work on having a healthier relationship with food.  I battled an eating disorder for 10 years when I was in my teens & early twenties…and, even though I successfully recovered, I recognize that this is an area where I still have struggles and where there is constant room for improvement.  It is slightly complicated by the fact that I do have some dietary restrictions due to my auto-immune disease, but I’m starting to make a concerted effort to practice more intuitive eating.  As hard as it is to let go of counting calories & macros, I’m learning that tracking those things only causes me to obsess more over what I’m putting into my body.  I ordered this book as a launching point, but there are lots of great articles you can read if you’re interested in learning more about this approach (here, here & here).  If you’re someone who has struggled with this in the past, I encourage you to explore intuitive eating – there is so much freedom to be found in rejecting “diet culture” & healing your relationship with food.

FACE MASK CHAINS

face mask chain

Admittedly, I’m late to the party with the adoption of this must-have accessory.  But, since face masks aren’t going away anytime soon, I decided it was time to invest in this trend because it’s so practical & helpful for keeping masks handy (plus, they look chic!).  I picked up this gold beaded chain (also love this 3-pack), this pearl chain, this paperclip chain, this tortoiseshell chain (in thin amber) and these woven cords for my husband & son (because they were constantly misplacing & losing their masks!).

BROW FREEZE

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze

Have you heard of brow laminating?  It’s a salon service that basically “perms” your brows to give them a straightened, uniform & full look.  If you do a quick Google search,  you can find some impressive before-and-after photos of the procedure.  As much as I love the finished look this gives, I’m not a fan of having all those chemicals that close to my eyes (and on my sensitive skin!).  So, I ordered this product to try & achieve similar results at home…and I’m in love!  This is totally different than any brow gel I’ve used before because it has a much stronger hold to it and it lasts all day long so even the tiniest brow hairs stay put.  A little goes a long way, so even though it’s a small jar, I know it will last me for several months.

HOOP EARRINGS

It’s hard to believe there was a time when I only wore statement earrings or studs…because, right now, it would be a rare day if you found me NOT wearing hoops.  Whether they are slim & understated or chunky & bold, these are the earrings that I reach for the most often.  Lately, I’ve especially been gravitating towards anything that has a unique detail – twisted, ribbed, bejeweled or textured…these styles below are anything but basic & they all look far more expensive than they are!

It’s been a while, so I figured it was about time for another Amazon round-up!  I always love hearing about what people buy there – because their inventory is so vast, you could literally spend days looking through all the fashion, kitchen & household gadgets, jewelry, etc.  So, hopefully these posts are helpful in narrowing down the best & most useful purchases for those on a budget.  Here are my current favorites for February:

Recent Amazon purchases

Amber Glass Soap Dispensers
Beautiful refillable containers that look so chic sitting on your kitchen counter (or you can set them on this tray).  I love the size of these & the neutral labels, plus they are such a great price!

Blue Light Blocking Glasses
My old pair of blue light glasses broke recently, so I ordered these to replace them & I really like how lightweight they are.  The thin frames feel very modern and they’re comfortable enough to wear all day long.  Be sure to clip the coupon for an extra 5% off!

Gold Bangle Bracelet
This bracelet is the one I get asked about the most often and anytime I share it here, it sells out quickly.  But it’s worth mentioning again because it’s one I wear almost everyday and it looks so high-end (another option here).

2 Layer Portable Food Storage Container
I took this to a brunch potluck with friends recently and everyone wanted to know where I got it.  This has been a lifesaver for carrying treats to school (pre-COVID), carting food to family get-togethers & parties and delivering treats to friends.  The cupcake/muffin inserts are removable and you can fit a standard 9×13 pan inside each layer!

High Waist Joggers
My friend Kendi shared about these & they looked so good on her that I immediately ordered them – she never steers me wrong, so I knew they were a safe bet!  I got my usual size and the fit is perfect – so soft & stretchy and great for lounging around the house in.  They come in tons of different colors & patterns and they have a 30-day full-money-back warranty.

Pan Organizer Rack
One of the best things I’ve ever bought for my mom (according to her).  The cupboard under her stove was such a mess and you would have to move three pans just to get to the one you wanted.  This solved all that and actually created more space so now she has room for cookie sheets, cooling racks & cutting boards too!  You can use this horizontally or vertically depending on the height of your cabinet.

Longline Padded Sports Bra
I think I mentioned this workout top before, but it’s quickly become one of my favorites.  I’ve been wearing it so much lately that I ended up ordering more colors!  I recommend sticking to your usual size unless you have a larger bust.  Side note: I don’t think this has enough compression for running, but it’s great for all other types of exercises.

Oval Marble Tray
Perfect for pairing with the amber soap dispensers shown above – but this would also be so pretty on a vanity with perfume bottles or to store your favorite jewelry that you wear frequently. This larger divided tray is another great option too (be sure to clip the coupon for an extra 5% off!).

Rug Grippers
I actually counted and discovered that my mom has 10 rugs throughout the house.  Whenever the dog runs up & down the hallway, they inevitably slide around and there’s one in the kitchen that I am constantly tripping on.  So these handy grippers were the perfect solution to hold all her rugs in place & ensure that the corners lay flat without leaving any marks or damage.  The best part is that they are washable & reusable so you can move them around as needed & they will last for a long time.

Beaded Huggie Hoops
I have had really good luck with Amazon jewelry lately – I think the key is to choose styles that are simple and be sure to read all the reviews thoroughly.  These dainty hoops are perfect for wearing in my second hole – these come in several different styles (I bought the beaded and the trio bead).

Travel Dispenser Bottles
I know not many of us are traveling right now, but this is one of those things that I know will come in handy in the future.  Each cylinder contains four small bottles that you can fill with shampoo, conditioner, body wash & lotion and it easily dispenses them all – so genius!  I plan on using these for camping, long weekend getaways to the beach & our upcoming Spring Break trip.

Bamboo Scrub Brush + Holder
Get ready to throw out all your sponges & scour pads because this tool cleans dishes even better!  The sturdy bristles remove everything without damaging your pans and it looks so nice sitting next to the sink in this little ceramic dish.

CZ Adjustable Tennis Bracelet
I have a hard time with chain bracelets because they are often too big on me.  So, I’m finding that I prefer styles that are adjustable so I can get a perfect fit.  This one has the look of an expensive tennis bracelet and it looks so nice stacked with other pieces (also comes in rose gold & silver).

Gold Band Ring
This is another ring that I’ve owned for a while & get asked about often (warning: this also has a high sell-out risk!).  I wear mine on my ring finger and stack the beaded ring (below) on top of it.

18K Gold Plated Croissant Ring
One of my favorite designs that has a retro feel – I ordered the large dome option & got mine in a bigger size so I could wear it on my pointer finger as more of a statement piece.

18K Gold Bead Stacking Ring
Perfect for stacking with other bands – I’m a big fan of this beaded ball detail & this pretty ring is no exception!

18K Gold Quilted Ring
This looks practically identical to the popular Chanel ring – I ordered the Gold Mid option and bought in a larger size so I can wear on my pointer finger.  This also comes in silver & there’s matching hoop earrings here.

18K White Gold Plated CZ Tennis Necklace
This looks so much like the BaubleBar version I recently bought, but it’s about half the price!  One of my friends got this and I was amazed by how expensive it looked – would make a great last-minute Valentine’s Day gift!

Sock Drawer Organizer
File this under something I should have purchased years ago.  I know it’s something small but it makes me so happy to be able to see all my socks at a quick glance & to not have to rummage through to find the pair I’m looking for.  I love it so much that I ordered another one for my underwear & bralettes!

Layered Monogram Pendant Necklace
These are actually two separate necklaces, so you can wear them alone or together.  The paper clip chain style is so popular right now and the quality is great.  I like that the monogram pendant is slightly smaller than the coin necklaces I own, which makes it more versatile.  For only $11, this would make a great gift!

Blush Loafer Mules
These are a great dupe for the Sam Edelman & Gucci mules if you like that look but don’t want to spend a fortune!  I Think these will be perfect for when the weather warms up a bit & we get closer to spring.  They come in several different colors (also eyeing the camel croc) & get great reviews!

Stackable Water Bottle Holder
One of my least favorite cabinets to open is the one with all our stainless steel water bottles – because you reach for one and inadvertently knock all the others down.  This acrylic holder alleviates that frustration by neatly stacking them all horizontally so you can quickly grab & go.  This set gets you a 2-pack (which holds 6) or you can get a 4-pack here.

January Monthly Edit

PLANNING
Valentine’s Day is just a few weeks away, so I’ve started planning for ways to make it special, even though we can’t go out for a nice dinner this year.  It’s one of those holidays that I love to go all out for – I usually do a festive breakfast for the kids and then for dinner, I make a heart-shaped meatloaf with pink mashed potatoes and red velvet cake for dessert.  If you’re not sure how to celebrate this year, some other fun ideas would be a fancy brunch with quiche, mimosas & heart-shaped scones (or these homemade pop tarts) and then spend the evening playing games, watching your favorite rom-com and making a heart-shaped pizza.

BUYING
I’ve been on a workout kick lately, which has made me realize that I had quite a bit of old activewear that needed replacing. So I thought I’d share some recent purchases I’ve made that I’m loving! For sleeveless tops (I wear for indoor workouts like Pilates, weight training & yoga), I picked up this longline sports bra, this cropped top (amazing Lululemon dupe!) and this muscle tank.  For short sleeve tops (I wear for Zumba & on warmer days for running), I bought this keyhole-back tee & this fitted seamless top.  And for long-sleeved tops (I wear for running, hiking & walking the dog), I bought this top & this quilted jacket (another great option here).

LOVING
Have you heard about the Nordstrom Beauty Container Recycling Program?  They are the first & only major retailer to offer a beauty recycling program that accepts all brands of beauty packaging.  All you have to do is bring in your empty cosmetic, haircare or skincare packaging & drop them in the BEAUTYCYCLE boxes available in the beauty department at your local Nordstrom store (view the full list of acceptable products here).  They will then be taken to a TerraCycle center where they’ll be cleaned, separated & recycled into new products like park benches, picnic tables, etc.  I love that they are committed to making a difference & I think this is such a simple way that we can all increase our efforts in this area too!

TRYING
I’ve tried other collagen products in the past, but when a friend of mine shared her before/after photos after a month of using this magical elixir, I immediately placed an order.  I really like that this brand uses marine collagen from fish (rather than from cows or chickens) and that it also contains Vitamin C, zinc, aloe vera juice & biotin.  The fact that it tastes like grape juice is just the icing on the cake!  The recyclable glass bottles are one full serving – I’ve been taking it every day in the afternoon for the last week & I can’t wait to see my results at the end of the month (other users reported significant hair growth, more radiant skin & less joint pain).  Learn more about it here & sign up to order yours here.

USING
I talked at length in this post about how I’m on a mission to get my hair healthy again.  And, in addition to switching up my haircare products, I also swapped out the rubber bands I’ve been using.  Now that my hair is short, I find I’m putting it up in a ponytail less, but I still like to have it out of my face when I’m exercising.  After doing some research, I ordered these hair ties & I can’t say enough good things about them!  They keep my hair back without snagging or pulling and they don’t leave that annoying crease in your hair like other elastics do.  These come in different widths for long, fine or thick hair so you can get exactly what you need – be sure to clip the coupon for an extra 10% off!

CRAVING
I’ve been on the hunt for a pair of light neutral flats for a while, so when I came across these, I quickly added them to my wish list.  I’m starting to prefer mules over loafers in general & I think this color will be perfect for the spring and summer months (another great option here).  There are so many great deals to be found as retailers prepare to make room for new spring arrivals – some of my top picks under $50 include this chic sweater blazer, these neutral booties, this pleated skirt (only $13!), this bobble-sleeve cardigan, these cigarette jeans (bought & love!), this floral wrap dress, these suede booties & this wrap-front sweater.
