Here are some simple steps to getting rid of unworn, unwanted clothing and what to do with it!

**TIP: To make this process easier, perform these steps for small sections of your wardrobe, rather than tackling everything in one sitting. This tip is critical if you have a large wardrobe.

Steps to Closet Detox: How to Get Rid of Clothes

  1. Take EVERYTHING out of your closet/drawers
  2. Assess every item
  3. Make a pile for recycle/donate, sell, and keep
  4. Put clothes away
  5. Recycle/Donate or sell
  6. Next Steps

Take Everything Out of your closet

Removing everything from your closet, or dresser, forces you to evaluate each item closely. If left in the closet, it is easier to bypass and not really consider if an item should be kept or not. This will ensure a more effective closet detox. Taking everything out also helps the organization process at the end!

Assess Every Item

For each piece, you must make a decision: Keep, Recycle, Sell. Ask yourself the questions in the guide below to determine what to do. If you aren’t sure, set it aside and come back to the item at the end.

This is an effective closet detox tool to identify clothes that you love and will wear frequently!

I would say the ONLY exception to this guide is sentimental pieces, that hold a personal value to you. Of course, to have a tidy closet, keep these pieces to a minimum, but use your own personal discretion for sentimental items.

how to get rid of clothes

Question to ask yourself
  1. Is the item damaged? Any damage beyond your ability (physically or financially) to repair should be removed from your closet.
  2. Do you love it? It is important to love everything in your closet. If a garment is not loved, it likely won’t be worn much at all. Therefore, taking up space in your closet.
  3. Does it fit? This one can be debatable, however if it hasn’t fit in 1 ½ years, it is time to go! There may be an exception if you are actively working toward your goal weight and nearly able to wear the item. If this is the case, you must be able to answer all other questions leading to KEEP in order to keep this piece.
  4. Is it comfortable? Everything about the item must be comfortable and flattering for your lifestyle. It would not make sense for a stay-at-home mom to have several pencil skirts, simply because she would not be comfortable in a pencil skirt for a majority of her daily activities.
  5. Do you feel confident in it? Everything must make YOU feel confident. It can be tough to part with items you LOVE that make you feel less than amazing. If you aren’t confident, you may not get the maximum wear out of the item. On the fence? Put it aside to the end and reassess later!
  6. Has it been worn in the last 1 ½ years? Most will say to get rid of anything you haven’t worn in a year. For a majority of us, the pandemic changed our lifestyles for a period of time. You may be still adjusting your lifestyle to a new “normal”. In that case, if you haven’t worn an item in 1 ½ – 2 years, it should probably be given a new home. Again, use your discretion, as you know your lifestyle best. If you are planning to return to the office in 2022, please do not get rid of your office attire!

Maintain a separate pile for Keep/Sell/Donate

If you will be doing this process over multiple days, use storage totes, laundry baskets, or garbage bags to contain your piles.

Put clothes away

Hang all clothing by type. All pants together, tanks together, long sleeves together, etc. Subcategorize each type by color.

This is my favorite system for hanging, because it is easier to find specific pieces.

Here are some things to help you organize:

The best, no slip, hangers

Garment bags

Cube storage (to organize shelving space)

Pant Hangers

Zippered storage bags

Hanger Space savers (reduce hanging space)

**Seasonal tip: store clothing that is not relevant to the current season in a separate part of your closet (in garment bags), or in storage tubs elsewhere in your home. This alleviates the feeling of being overwhelmed by your closet and frees up hanging space so that you clearly see all items available for the season you are in.

Recycle/Donate or Sell Unwanted pieces

Did you know, nearly 80% of unwanted clothing ends up in landfills? Further, most synthetic clothing could take hundreds of years to fully decompose. Let’s avoid that and keep clothing out of the trash.

Here is what you can do with unwanted clothing

  1. Donate: I like this option because the clothing is given another life. This also benefits other people. Donate to local thrift stores, homeless or women’s shelters, and other organizations. This extends the longevity of clothing and avoids the landfill.
  2. Recycle unwanted clothes (sharing more on this next week)! There are websites that will send you a recycling bag for you to send in clothing that they will recycle or repurpose!
  3. Sell: There are several sites to sell clothes that are in good, used condition. I personally like sites like this because you can buy AND sell. I’ve purchased a lot of amazing name brand pieces, for a fraction of the price, on resale clothing sites. Here are a few options:
    • Poshmark: Earn money from unwanted clothing and then shop from other Poshers! Poshmark is more of a social resale platform, which is great because you can connect with Poshers who have similar style to you! Creating a listing is super easy!
    • thredUP: Order a Clean Out Kit from ThredUp to recycle, and possibly make money on your old clothes! The best part? ThredUp prepares the clothing and lists for sale. All you do is order a kit, send them your clothes in the kit, and wait for a sale! Unsold items go to recycle. Thredup has a phenomenal recycle program.
    • Tradesy: With every sale you make, Tradesy prepares packing (including printing the shipping labels) for you! They do charge fees for this, depending on the dollar amount of your sale. Definitely a good option if you don’t want to deal with packaging.

Next Steps after Detox

Perform the next steps soon after a closet detox. I Maintain the most effective closet if it is well organized and tidy, a closet detox helps with that.

Asses what is in your closet

Determine if you have necessary wardrobe staples – this will save you money in the long run!

  • Have a neat closet
  • Have many outfits ready to wear
Are you still feeling overwhelmed in your closet?

Try another detox in a month or two! Learning how to get rid of clothes is something that can take several tries. Come back to this guide and follow the steps again.

For me, we moved in 2021. Prior to moving, I detoxed my closet because it had to happen. I went through my closet 2 times AFTER moving, over a period of 9 months, and got rid of so much STUFF. Guess what, I still have work to do. The more you work at it, the easier it is to identify items that are simply EXCESS.

What are wardrobe staples?

Wardrobe staples are neutral pieces that rarely go out of style. They are mostly solid colors and can be mixed and matched easily with each other, or paired with current trends very easily.

Wardrobe staples are the heartbeat of every closet. Staples range from the ultra-casual t-shirt and jeans, to the classic black dress. These staples, although basic, can be easily dressed up or dressed down. A basic white t-shirt and jeans, for example, can be dressed up with heels and a leather jacket. While a black dress can be dressed down with a jean jacket and sneakers. These pieces coordinate so well because they are primarily solid colors. In fact, the only pattern included in the staple wardrobe here is a striped long sleeve tee and leopard shoes. The colors of these prints are neutral and the pattens are minimalistic, so for me they’re acceptable neutrals!

Most capsule wardrobes, like this, include several pieces from this staple list, simply because they are essential to creating beautiful, effortless outfits. Scroll through to shop specific pieces below!

Staple Wardrobe

Staple Wardrobe Colors

The key to a cohesive staple wardrobe is the neutral color palette. Black, White, Gray, and Beige are the primary colors in this staple wardrobe. I incorporated a green utility jacket, but this coordinates nicely with the other neutral pieces.

It is important to note that many of the staple pieces are black. Some people prefer navy over black, which is an easy substitute for most pieces. The leather jacket could be substituted for brown or taupe. The black jeans could also be swapped with gray jeans!

By sticking to neutral colors, these 20 pieces can make over 100 outfits together! Want to find see how? Submit your email to receive this exclusive content!

How Many Pieces are in a Staple Wardrobe?

This staple wardrobe includes 20 pieces: 5 tops, 4 jackets, 1 coat, 1 dress, 4 pants, 1 skirt, 4 shoes. These items are the foundation of a full wardrobe. With each piece you add beyond the 20 shown here, you will be able to create even more outfit possibilities.

Add items like skirts, trousers, cardigans, jeans, and more shoes to fill out you closet and extend the wear of these pieces through each season.

Use the Closet Staples Checklist below to track which items you already have and need to buy!

**Tip when adding more items to this staple wardrobe: only add pieces that are neutral colors, similar to the colors shown in the staple wardrobe here. This will ensure every piece coordinates well and can be incorporated into beautiful outfits.

Make your Staple Wardrobe Last!

  1. Quality over quantity: since these pieces can be worn throughout the year, you want to make sure they will last. Buying higher quality pieces is recommended in order for you to obtain the maximum wear and usage of every item. Please note, this is not required. I’ve purchased staples from cost effective retailers that lasted several seasons.
  2. Neutral Colors: Use only the neutral colors, as shown in this staple wardrobe. If other colors are used, they may not be able to be worn with other staples. To make sure you get the most use of your staples, try sticking with neutral colors: black, white, gray, beige, denim.
  3. Try before you buy: Since these are items you will wear a lot, you should feel comfortable and confident in every piece. Therefore, I recommend trying each item on before you buy. If you shop online, make sure you understand the return options BEFORE you purchase. This will allow you to try on in the comfort of your home and return if the item isn’t right for you.

The 20 Pieces

Before jumping in and buying all new pieces for your closet, take a look at what you already own. Many of these items you probably have already! Use the checklist above to track what you already own and then see what you need to buy.

Swapping out items

When you go through your closet, be mindful of your lifestyle. The exact pieces shown here may not fit your lifestyle, so use this as a guide for buying comparable items to fit your lifestyle. Take the blazer, for example. If you are a stay-at-home mom, try swapping this out for a structured cardigan or car coat! The pencil skirt could also be swapped for a ribbed pants! Always make sure you use neutral colors.

The Essential List Of Shoes

It’s safe to say a majority of women, particularly those of you reading this, appreciate a great shoe! Today I’m sharing 8 types of shoes for woman that should be in her closet. Shoes are fun because, generally speaking, there aren’t as many restrictions in terms of size & fit compared to other clothing items. Pants, for example, come in so many shapes and sizes and fits and colors, which gets complicated. Shoes are so much easier! They can turn a bland look into a polished, fashion forward look. Sometimes though, it can be hard to pick the right shoe.

This post is here to help you out and make sure you have all of the shoe staples you’ll ever need in your closet. That way, when you aren’t sure which shoe to choose, one of these 8 choices is sure to be a winner! Everything is under $100 as of writing this post! These shoes aren’t trendy. However, they are timeless styles that can be worn with a majority of your outfits. Many of these are featured in capsule wardrobes, like this one, and packing lists, like this.

8 Types of Shoes Every Woman Should Own

1. Black Pumps

A classic black pump is the ultimate essential of all types of shoes for women, generally speaking. It can be worn with a t-shirt and jeans to instantly polish an ultra casual look. Or it can be worn to a formal black-tie event. Even if your daily lifestyle doesn’t require a heel, I recommend having a pair for special occasions.

2.  Black Flat

I consider a black flat a more comfortable version of a black pump. Whether you work in an office or are a stay-at-home mom, a black flat fits any lifestyle! Wear with pants or a nice dress. A good black flat is extremely versatile.

3. White Sneaker

White sneakers made a huge comeback in recent years. Today, you see them styled with pants and even dresses! There are even professional office wear looks that look good with a clean, modern sneaker. The versatility makes it an essential shoe every woman should own.

4. Leopard Flat

In my opinion, leopard is a neutral. Are you with me?! I think leopard, when used in moderation, can be paired with any look. I even like to pair a nice leopard flat with a plaid top. The options are endless, that’s why I have included a leopard flat on the essential list of types of shoes for women.

5. Tall Boot

For boots like this, I do recommend keeping the color either black or brown. I like the cognac brown personally. These are essential for cooler climates but can also be worn in climates that are warm (not hot) with dresses and skirts.

6. Ankle Boots

Ankle boots, particularly suede or leather, are a must for fall and winter. The lighter tan color can also be worn well into the spring. I recommend a lighter tan because you will get more wear for your money. However, if you work in an office setting, black would be my recommendation.

7. Sandals

The outfit possibilities are endless with a great sandal. Sandals can be worn from late spring to early fall, which is why I recommend most women have at least one good pair in their closet. I also like to take a nice sandal when we go on a beach vacation.

8. Slippers

Whether you work from home or not, you need a nice slipper. Having a structured slipper not only keeps your feet warm, but it makes you feel a little more “dressed” on days you’re not leaving the house. When I’m not working, I like to have a slipper that resembles a real shoe for when we have company.

BONUS

There is one more shoe I think every wardrobe needs. A chelsea boot. These are so comfortable yet stylish! I have a pair and wear them so much during the fall. In the winter, I like to layer cozy socks over skinny jeans with these boots. I prefer the rainboot style, that way I have a stylish shoe for wet weather.
