Sustainable Fashion – What is it?

Sustainability in fashion

This can sound intimidating, but it is quite simple. Sustainable fashion is fashion that creates an overall positive impact on the environment, community, and physical garment produced by the fashion industry. Sustainability in fashion is understanding the impact of the entire lifecycle of clothing. It ensures there are positive impacts throughout the process. The lifecycle encompasses the entire production process, supply chain, consumption, and end-of-life stages.

This year, I want to learn more about sustainable fashion and maintain a mindful wardrobe. I will be decreasing the number of purchases I make and focusing on these three simple things:

  1. Recycle clothing I do not wear or need
  2. Extend the wear of pieces I already have
  3. Buy less
  4. Shop my closet first, before buying new

sustainability in Fashion

Three Categories of Sustainable Fashion

Sustainable fashion is the umbrella term for three subcategories. To fully understand what sustainability in fashion is, it is important to know these terms.

  1. Ethical Fashion

This is the community impact of occupational standards in factories. Ethics can cover several things, but the two obvious are fair wages and safe working conditions. In general, ethical fashion is more expensive because the brand likely provides fair wages and good working conditions. Labor is one of the most expensive components when it comes to pricing clothes.

Several fast fashion brands have often been criticized for the harsh working conditions of their factory workers, in addition to many workers earning below a living wage. Meaning, they do not earn enough to support their basic needs. This is one of the reasons why clothing can be sold at steep discounts.

  1. Eco-Fashion

This is the environmental impact of the fashion industry. Eco-fashion involves materials made from renewable sources, the responsible management of material waste, recycling, renewable energy, carbon-neutral shipping, and product transparency.

Beware of Greenwashing! Fast-fashion brands want consumers to believe they are sustainable, so they use more eco-friendly materials in a small number of items, however their overall business model does not support sustainability.

*TIP: Unsure what a brand stands for, visit the about page on their site. Here, you can find information on sustainability initiatives. Often, if a brand is primarily sustainable (and not greenwashing) they will provide full transparency regarding their sustainability initiatives across the entire business.

  1. Slow Fashion

This is the idea of appreciating and maximizing the wear of clothing we already have.

It is slowing down our purchasing decisions and really considering whether we NEED to purchase an item. An example is purchasing just one quality t-shirt each year, instead of purchasing 5 t-shirts.

There are over 50+ micro fashion seasons today. At one point in time there were only two seasons: Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Brands make huge profits by turning over low-quality products at a high pace. With this turn over, consumers are flooded with endless marketing tactics leading them to believe they need the newest items, when really, they don’t.

This is not to say that you cannot have great pieces from fast fashion brands. You can! And if that’s what is in the budget for you right now, take the time to try on each piece before you buy.

TIP: If shopping fast fashion, do not go in with the “haul” mindset. If everyone does this, brands would be forced to have a slow mentality as well.

Misconceptions about Sustainable Fashion

Sustainable fashion is overpriced

After reading the above information, it is important to understand that each aspect of sustainable fashion (eco, ethical, and slow) plays a role in the brand setting the prices for their clothing. Brands that do not participate in any of these initiatives are able to set lower prices because they do not have the overhead costs associated with sustainable initiatives.

Therefore, sustainable clothing is not overpriced; it is simply a fair price. Many sustainable brands, like Quince, will provide full breakdown of their product costs. When we (the consumer) have this information, we can appreciate our clothing more.

For me, I think longevity of clothing is important when considering the pricing. Having quality, durable pieces means I could potentially get more wears out of the item. Thus, I will save more money in the long term.

My FAVORITE thing about sustainable fashion is knowing the PEOPLE behind the scenes (factory workers and families) are treated fairly. Knowing a company supports their workers, makes the higher price tag comforting in a way.

You either buy sustainable or fast fashion, there is no in between

There is an in between, especially if affordability is imperative to you. You should always shop within your budget. If fast fashion is what you can afford, I think the key is to be mindful of quantity and to not have a “haul” mindset when shopping.

It is important, too, to take care of fast fashion clothing in the same respects we do for higher priced items. The more care and attention given to ALL clothing, regardless of brand, the longer we will wear it and the less often we will be shopping for replacements.

Slowly start incorporating sustainable brands by saving to buy one quality item (jean jacket or white tee) that you can wear all year for years to come!

SAVINGS TIP: Another great option, if you need to be mindful of budget, is to shop second hand! This is a great way to contribute to sustainable fashion

Next week I will share 20 affordable sustainable fashion brands with you! There are several ways you can save!

how to get rid of clothes

Declutter & Detox Your Closet

Is your closet full of so many clothes that you feel overwhelmed?  Do you find yourself forgetting about garments, leaving unworn items in your closet?  Are there clothes in your closet that no longer fit your current lifestyle?  Is it difficult to find things in your closet? Frustrated because you don’t know where to start to get rid of clothes and clutter?

If you answered yes to any of those question, or you just need guidance for decluttering your closet, you are in the right place.

It is time to dive in and detox, declutter, and organize your clothing! After going through each of the steps you’re about to read, you will be on your way to an organized closet you can feel good about! An effective closet detox has many benefits. Get dressed quickly, alleviate closet frustrations, and feel good about your outfits.

Here are some simple steps to getting rid of unworn, unwanted clothing and what to do with it!

**TIP: To make this process easier, perform these steps for small sections of your wardrobe, rather than tackling everything in one sitting. This tip is critical if you have a large wardrobe.

Steps to Closet Detox: How to Get Rid of Clothes

  1. Take EVERYTHING out of your closet/drawers
  2. Assess every item
  3. Make a pile for recycle/donate, sell, and keep
  4. Put clothes away
  5. Recycle/Donate or sell
  6. Next Steps

Take Everything Out of your closet

Removing everything from your closet, or dresser, forces you to evaluate each item closely. If left in the closet, it is easier to bypass and not really consider if an item should be kept or not. This will ensure a more effective closet detox. Taking everything out also helps the organization process at the end!

Assess Every Item

For each piece, you must make a decision: Keep, Recycle, Sell. Ask yourself the questions in the guide below to determine what to do. If you aren’t sure, set it aside and come back to the item at the end.

This is an effective closet detox tool to identify clothes that you love and will wear frequently!

I would say the ONLY exception to this guide is sentimental pieces, that hold a personal value to you. Of course, to have a tidy closet, keep these pieces to a minimum, but use your own personal discretion for sentimental items.

how to get rid of clothes

Question to ask yourself
  1. Is the item damaged? Any damage beyond your ability (physically or financially) to repair should be removed from your closet.
  2. Do you love it? It is important to love everything in your closet. If a garment is not loved, it likely won’t be worn much at all. Therefore, taking up space in your closet.
  3. Does it fit? This one can be debatable, however if it hasn’t fit in 1 ½ years, it is time to go! There may be an exception if you are actively working toward your goal weight and nearly able to wear the item. If this is the case, you must be able to answer all other questions leading to KEEP in order to keep this piece.
  4. Is it comfortable? Everything about the item must be comfortable and flattering for your lifestyle. It would not make sense for a stay-at-home mom to have several pencil skirts, simply because she would not be comfortable in a pencil skirt for a majority of her daily activities.
  5. Do you feel confident in it? Everything must make YOU feel confident. It can be tough to part with items you LOVE that make you feel less than amazing. If you aren’t confident, you may not get the maximum wear out of the item. On the fence? Put it aside to the end and reassess later!
  6. Has it been worn in the last 1 ½ years? Most will say to get rid of anything you haven’t worn in a year. For a majority of us, the pandemic changed our lifestyles for a period of time. You may be still adjusting your lifestyle to a new “normal”. In that case, if you haven’t worn an item in 1 ½ – 2 years, it should probably be given a new home. Again, use your discretion, as you know your lifestyle best. If you are planning to return to the office in 2022, please do not get rid of your office attire!

Maintain a separate pile for Keep/Sell/Donate

If you will be doing this process over multiple days, use storage totes, laundry baskets, or garbage bags to contain your piles.

Put clothes away

Hang all clothing by type. All pants together, tanks together, long sleeves together, etc. Subcategorize each type by color.

This is my favorite system for hanging, because it is easier to find specific pieces.

Here are some things to help you organize:

The best, no slip, hangers

Garment bags

Cube storage (to organize shelving space)

Pant Hangers

Zippered storage bags

Hanger Space savers (reduce hanging space)

**Seasonal tip: store clothing that is not relevant to the current season in a separate part of your closet (in garment bags), or in storage tubs elsewhere in your home. This alleviates the feeling of being overwhelmed by your closet and frees up hanging space so that you clearly see all items available for the season you are in.

Recycle/Donate or Sell Unwanted pieces

Did you know, nearly 80% of unwanted clothing ends up in landfills? Further, most synthetic clothing could take hundreds of years to fully decompose. Let’s avoid that and keep clothing out of the trash.

Here is what you can do with unwanted clothing

  1. Donate: I like this option because the clothing is given another life. This also benefits other people. Donate to local thrift stores, homeless or women’s shelters, and other organizations. This extends the longevity of clothing and avoids the landfill.
  2. Recycle unwanted clothes (sharing more on this next week)! There are websites that will send you a recycling bag for you to send in clothing that they will recycle or repurpose!
  3. Sell: There are several sites to sell clothes that are in good, used condition. I personally like sites like this because you can buy AND sell. I’ve purchased a lot of amazing name brand pieces, for a fraction of the price, on resale clothing sites. Here are a few options:
    • Poshmark: Earn money from unwanted clothing and then shop from other Poshers! Poshmark is more of a social resale platform, which is great because you can connect with Poshers who have similar style to you! Creating a listing is super easy!
    • thredUP: Order a Clean Out Kit from ThredUp to recycle, and possibly make money on your old clothes! The best part? ThredUp prepares the clothing and lists for sale. All you do is order a kit, send them your clothes in the kit, and wait for a sale! Unsold items go to recycle. Thredup has a phenomenal recycle program.
    • Tradesy: With every sale you make, Tradesy prepares packing (including printing the shipping labels) for you! They do charge fees for this, depending on the dollar amount of your sale. Definitely a good option if you don’t want to deal with packaging.

Next Steps after Detox

Perform the next steps soon after a closet detox. I Maintain the most effective closet if it is well organized and tidy, a closet detox helps with that.

Asses what is in your closet

Determine if you have necessary wardrobe staples – this will save you money in the long run!

Wardrobe staples are basic pieces that are incorporated to outfits throughout the entire year. These pieces are timeless; therefore, they won’t go out of style.

Not sure if you have a proper staple wardrobe? Check out this post to see a recommended staple wardrobe.

While you’re at it, perform a closet checkup on your shoes. How do they look? Are they worn out? Do you have a pair for EVERY outfit? In this post, you can browse 8 popular, budget friendly styles, that are sure to look great with any outfit.

Consider Implementing a capsule wardrobe each season, like this. Why?

  • Save money each year by buying less clothes
  • Get dressed quickly
  • Feel confident in your clothes
  • Have a neat closet
  • Have many outfits ready to wear
Are you still feeling overwhelmed in your closet?

Try another detox in a month or two! Learning how to get rid of clothes is something that can take several tries. Come back to this guide and follow the steps again.

For me, we moved in 2021. Prior to moving, I detoxed my closet because it had to happen. I went through my closet 2 times AFTER moving, over a period of 9 months, and got rid of so much STUFF. Guess what, I still have work to do. The more you work at it, the easier it is to identify items that are simply EXCESS.

Need help with your detox process, feel free to email me!

What are wardrobe staples?

Wardrobe staples are neutral pieces that rarely go out of style. They are mostly solid colors and can be mixed and matched easily with each other, or paired with current trends very easily.

Wardrobe staples are the heartbeat of every closet. Staples range from the ultra-casual t-shirt and jeans, to the classic black dress. These staples, although basic, can be easily dressed up or dressed down. A basic white t-shirt and jeans, for example, can be dressed up with heels and a leather jacket. While a black dress can be dressed down with a jean jacket and sneakers. These pieces coordinate so well because they are primarily solid colors. In fact, the only pattern included in the staple wardrobe here is a striped long sleeve tee and leopard shoes. The colors of these prints are neutral and the pattens are minimalistic, so for me they’re acceptable neutrals!

Most capsule wardrobes, like this, include several pieces from this staple list, simply because they are essential to creating beautiful, effortless outfits. Scroll through to shop specific pieces below!

Staple Wardrobe

Staple Wardrobe Colors

The key to a cohesive staple wardrobe is the neutral color palette. Black, White, Gray, and Beige are the primary colors in this staple wardrobe. I incorporated a green utility jacket, but this coordinates nicely with the other neutral pieces.

It is important to note that many of the staple pieces are black. Some people prefer navy over black, which is an easy substitute for most pieces. The leather jacket could be substituted for brown or taupe. The black jeans could also be swapped with gray jeans!

By sticking to neutral colors, these 20 pieces can make over 100 outfits together! Want to find see how? Submit your email to receive this exclusive content!

How Many Pieces are in a Staple Wardrobe?

This staple wardrobe includes 20 pieces: 5 tops, 4 jackets, 1 coat, 1 dress, 4 pants, 1 skirt, 4 shoes. These items are the foundation of a full wardrobe. With each piece you add beyond the 20 shown here, you will be able to create even more outfit possibilities.

Add items like skirts, trousers, cardigans, jeans, and more shoes to fill out you closet and extend the wear of these pieces through each season.

Use the Closet Staples Checklist below to track which items you already have and need to buy!

**Tip when adding more items to this staple wardrobe: only add pieces that are neutral colors, similar to the colors shown in the staple wardrobe here. This will ensure every piece coordinates well and can be incorporated into beautiful outfits.

Make your Staple Wardrobe Last!

  1. Quality over quantity: since these pieces can be worn throughout the year, you want to make sure they will last. Buying higher quality pieces is recommended in order for you to obtain the maximum wear and usage of every item. Please note, this is not required. I’ve purchased staples from cost effective retailers that lasted several seasons.
  2. Neutral Colors: Use only the neutral colors, as shown in this staple wardrobe. If other colors are used, they may not be able to be worn with other staples. To make sure you get the most use of your staples, try sticking with neutral colors: black, white, gray, beige, denim.
  3. Try before you buy: Since these are items you will wear a lot, you should feel comfortable and confident in every piece. Therefore, I recommend trying each item on before you buy. If you shop online, make sure you understand the return options BEFORE you purchase. This will allow you to try on in the comfort of your home and return if the item isn’t right for you.

The 20 Pieces

Before jumping in and buying all new pieces for your closet, take a look at what you already own. Many of these items you probably have already! Use the checklist above to track what you already own and then see what you need to buy.

Swapping out items

When you go through your closet, be mindful of your lifestyle. The exact pieces shown here may not fit your lifestyle, so use this as a guide for buying comparable items to fit your lifestyle. Take the blazer, for example. If you are a stay-at-home mom, try swapping this out for a structured cardigan or car coat! The pencil skirt could also be swapped for a ribbed pants! Always make sure you use neutral colors.

The 19 pieces

Below are the foundational pieces for a great wardrobe! Shop everything shown in the links below. Save or pin the image for later!

White Tee  //  White Jean  //  Ivory Sweater  //  Beige Cardigan  //  Gray Coat  //  Gray Tee  //  Stripe L/S  //  Black Dress  //  Leather Jacket  //  Blazer  //  Black Skirt  //  Black Pant  //  Black Jean  //  Blue Jeans  //  Jean Jacket  //  Utility Jacket  //  Black Pump  //  Leopard Flat  //  White Sneaker  //  Black Flat

Shoes

After you go through the items above, make sure you have shoes for every outfit throughout the year. In this post I’m sharing the only shoes you will ever need!

Cozy Winter Finds

Winter is the time to embrace all things cozy right, especially the pleated skirt outfit I’m sharing today. We are getting geared up for the holidays. Today I’m going to make my famous chocolate chip cookies and pretzel candy. I usually only make the cookies a few times throughout the year, so I may triple the batch since they always go fast. Before I get started, I wanted to share some cozy winter finds with you.

I am loving the neutral colors and the slight touch of green on this super soft jogger set! The pleated skirt is a must for the winter season, with the trendy pleats and cozy fabric. I have a similar skirt and wear it all the time this time of year. This pleated skirt can be made into a dressy or casual outfit

Pleated Skirt Outfit: Dressy

To dress up a pleated skirt, add a nice sweater! This could be a fitted sweater, like the one shown below, and chic shoes!

Another option to dress up this pleated skirt would be to layer it with a fitted tee and blazer.

Pleated Skirt Outfit: Casual

To dress down a pleated skirt outfit, you really only need two closet staples: a leather jacket & comfy graphic tee!

I also like the idea of pairing a crewneck sweatshirt, like the one below. It is important to either fully tuck, or front tuck, these tops so that the outfit isn’t fumpy!

I hope that gives you some outfit inspo for styling a pleated skirt! Now here are some more fun finds for you!

Gray Sweater  //  Flat  //  Bracelet  //  Gold Hair Clips  //  Jeans  //  Leopard Beanie  //  Leopard Scarf  //  Pleated Knit Skirt  //  Camel Purse  //  Jogger Top  //  Jogger Pant  //  Ankle Bootie  //  Cream Duster

Here are the other colors offered for some of my favorite pieces.

The Essential List Of Shoes

It’s safe to say a majority of women, particularly those of you reading this, appreciate a great shoe! Today I’m sharing 8 types of shoes for woman that should be in her closet. Shoes are fun because, generally speaking, there aren’t as many restrictions in terms of size & fit compared to other clothing items. Pants, for example, come in so many shapes and sizes and fits and colors, which gets complicated. Shoes are so much easier! They can turn a bland look into a polished, fashion forward look. Sometimes though, it can be hard to pick the right shoe.

This post is here to help you out and make sure you have all of the shoe staples you’ll ever need in your closet. That way, when you aren’t sure which shoe to choose, one of these 8 choices is sure to be a winner! Everything is under $100 as of writing this post! These shoes aren’t trendy. However, they are timeless styles that can be worn with a majority of your outfits. Many of these are featured in capsule wardrobes, like this one, and packing lists, like this.

8 Types of Shoes Every Woman Should Own

1. Black Pumps

A classic black pump is the ultimate essential of all types of shoes for women, generally speaking. It can be worn with a t-shirt and jeans to instantly polish an ultra casual look. Or it can be worn to a formal black-tie event. Even if your daily lifestyle doesn’t require a heel, I recommend having a pair for special occasions.

2.  Black Flat

I consider a black flat a more comfortable version of a black pump. Whether you work in an office or are a stay-at-home mom, a black flat fits any lifestyle! Wear with pants or a nice dress. A good black flat is extremely versatile.

3. White Sneaker

White sneakers made a huge comeback in recent years. Today, you see them styled with pants and even dresses! There are even professional office wear looks that look good with a clean, modern sneaker. The versatility makes it an essential shoe every woman should own.

4. Leopard Flat

In my opinion, leopard is a neutral. Are you with me?! I think leopard, when used in moderation, can be paired with any look. I even like to pair a nice leopard flat with a plaid top. The options are endless, that’s why I have included a leopard flat on the essential list of types of shoes for women.

5. Tall Boot

For boots like this, I do recommend keeping the color either black or brown. I like the cognac brown personally. These are essential for cooler climates but can also be worn in climates that are warm (not hot) with dresses and skirts.

6. Ankle Boots

Ankle boots, particularly suede or leather, are a must for fall and winter. The lighter tan color can also be worn well into the spring. I recommend a lighter tan because you will get more wear for your money. However, if you work in an office setting, black would be my recommendation.

7. Sandals

The outfit possibilities are endless with a great sandal. Sandals can be worn from late spring to early fall, which is why I recommend most women have at least one good pair in their closet. I also like to take a nice sandal when we go on a beach vacation.

8. Slippers

Whether you work from home or not, you need a nice slipper. Having a structured slipper not only keeps your feet warm, but it makes you feel a little more “dressed” on days you’re not leaving the house. When I’m not working, I like to have a slipper that resembles a real shoe for when we have company.

BONUS

There is one more shoe I think every wardrobe needs. A chelsea boot. These are so comfortable yet stylish! I have a pair and wear them so much during the fall. In the winter, I like to layer cozy socks over skinny jeans with these boots. I prefer the rainboot style, that way I have a stylish shoe for wet weather.

Christmas & New Years Outfits From a Winter Capsule

As you finish holiday shopping, it’s time to start planning those Christmas & New Years outfits. Work parties, family gatherings, or just celebrating at home. Do you know what you will be wearing? If you utilize a winter capsule wardrobe, here are 4 steps to take to create a beautiful holiday look from a winter capsule.

  1. Take one piece from your capsule wardrobe. Any solid color bottom, top, or dress.
  2. Pair the capsule piece with a coordinating festive piece. For this, I like to choose a festive piece that has sparkle, plaid, chunk texture, or a fun print like the trending fair isle.
  3. Add accessories. Depending on what you chose for item two, add accessories to compliment your holiday look. You likely have plenty of accessories to use, try shopping your closet before purchasing new accessories.

Holiday Look #1

This outfit takes the pants from the capsule wardrobe, which are standard black skinny pants you already own. Then, an embellished sweater, red shoes, evening bag (great staple), and statement earrings are added to complete the look. The red shoe adds a festive look to the outfit, however a neutral shoe from your closet would also work well with this outfit!

Holiday Look #2 – New Years Look

The jeans shown in this look are from the winter capsule wardrobe. Any jean style would pair nicely with this outfit. Adding a fun sparkly top and coordinating accessories to top off this polished edgy look! Love this as a New Years oufit!

My favorite black sweater from the capsule is paired here with an amazing sequin skirt. I feel like sequins are an essential to a great new years outfits! Other skirt options linked HERE, HERE $50, and HERE $60. The flats shown are so pretty and on sale! You could also pair with a black heel or flat from your closet.

Another favorite from the capsule, this sweater dress! There are many options for dressing up a simple piece like this. Here, I have it styled with a plaid scarf blanket & statement jewelry.

Overwhelmed by all of the options in your closet?  Tired of spending money on the trending seasonal look?  Is your closet full of clothes, but you feel like you have nothing to wear?  Dreaming of the effortless looks you see on social media?  Wishing you could finally commit to creating a capsule wardrobe?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are in the right place.

If I’m being honest, I answered yes to every single one of those questions.  This is what inspired me to create a capsule and share with you! A capsule wardrobe is a small set of clothes and shoes, which all mix and match and make many outfits together. Use this winter capsule wardrobe to reduce stress, save time, and make your (fashion) life a little bit easier.

Subscribe below to Penny Picher Fashion’s email distribution and receive a FREE outfit calendar, where I will share 52 outfits from this winter capsule wardrobe and a daily outfit planner. The daily outfit planner will give you a full outfit for the day (from this capsule of course), so you just have to grab the pieces & get dressed in the morning. This takes the guess work out of getting dressed.

How many pieces are in the Winter Capsule Wardrobe?

While every capsule wardrobe is different, this one contains 22 pieces: 8 tops, 3 layering items, 1 dress, 4 pants, 2 coats, and 4 shoes. I was able to create 52 outfits using all just 20 pieces from this capsule (excluded the coats).

Considering I work from home and have a casual style, this capsule reflects that. I don’t wear dresses or skirts often, but like having one on hand for a special occasion. If you need to dress this capsule up a bit, you could swap out a pair of pants for a black pencil or midi skirt. The black cardigan could also be replaced with a black blazer.

Winter Capsule Colors

This capsule is primarily using a neutral color palette full of black, white, gray, camel, & denim. For the winter season, I decided to use emerald green as the accent color. This could easily be swapped out for maroon, red, or royal blue. Many of these pieces are wardrobe staples (striped tee, leggings, leather jacket, etc.), so you may find you have a lot of these pieces and colors in your closet already.

Stay tuned, next week I will be giving all the details and tips on creating a staple wardrobe. This will equip you to build a closet foundation full of pieces that can be worn throughout the year! This helps you save time and money!

Build you Winter Capsule Wardrobe

I encourage you to do some shopping in your closet. Like I said before, you may already have a lot of these items. Make a little list of the pieces you don’t have and shop below or pin this page and take it with you for reference when you go shopping.

Below, I will list out each exact piece below with a shoppable link. Keep scrolling for category specific details, where I’ll share additional options (e.g. if you don’t prefer the green body suit, I will share a similar option that is not a body suit)

  1. Camel Tee
  2. Turtleneck
  3. Black Sweater
  4. Striped Long Sleeve Tee
  5. Gray Sweatshirt
  6. Satin Top
  7. Plaid Top
  8. White Button Up
  9. Camel Duster
  10. Black Cardigan
  11. Faux Leather Jacket
  12. Sweater Dress
  13. Gray Knit Pant
  14. Faux-Leather Legging
  15. Relaxed Jean
  16. Black Skinny Pant
  17. Gray Coat
  18. Black Puffer Coat
  19. Leopard Flat
  20. White Sneaker
  21. Black Ankle Boot
  22. Camel Boot

Tops

Many of these are wardrobe staples that you may already have in your closet. What is nice about a neutral color palette, is that if you prefer a specific neutral color over another that is an easy change. For example, if you do not like the camel t-shirt shown, you could use a black, gray, or white tee! This will still coordinate with the other pieces in the capsule. Just try not to get too many pieces of the same color. I am guilty of buying black everything!

Below are my recommendations for tops. FOr the turtleneck and black sweater, I am linking cashmere options as well. I cannot say enough good things about investing in a quality cashmere sweater. I personally wear the same cashmere sweater I purchased 10 years ago. They hold up so well! When shopping for these winter capsule cashmere pieces, search “turtleneck” and “crew neck”. Gentle Herd offers amazing cashmere at affordable prices. Right now they have 30% off!

  1. Camel Tee SKIMS  //  Target
  2. Turtleneck Rack // JCrew Factory  // Cashmere
  3. White Button Up Abercrombie //   Old Navy
  4. Gray Sweatshirt Crewneck //  V Neck
  5. Black Sweater //  Cashmere
  6. Striped Long Sleeve Tee Nordstrom //  JCrew
  7. Plaid Top JCrew //  Old Navy
  8. Satin Top Express //  Amazon

Layers & Dress

If you need to dress up a little bit, the black cardigan or leather jacket can be replaced with a black blazer. The dress can also be swapped for another color. White is a great option for winter. Don’t forget to layer tights under the dress if you are in a cold climate.

  1. Faux Leather Jacket  //  Amazon
  2. Black Cardigan  //  Option 2
  3. Camel Duster Express  //  Option 2
  4. Sweater Dress Rack  //  Amazon

Bottoms

4 pant options are included in this winter capsule wardrobe. These are all casual, neutral pieces that go very well with the other items in this casual. 3 of these pants are wardrobe staples: the faux leather legging, black ankle pant, and jeans. The gray pant is a great option for winter because it is warm and flattering. Any of the options here can be substituted for a pencil, ribbed, or midi skirt. You could also add a pair of skinny jeans if you desire.

  1. Gray Knit Pant Express  //  Abercrombie
  2. Faux-Leather Legging SPANX  //  Amazon
  3. Relaxed Jean Abercrombie  //  Rack
  4. Black Skinny Pant Express  //  Amazon

Coats and Shoes

I sometimes treat leopard as a neutral color. It is a minimalistic pattern and the colors coordinate so well with other neutral colors. That is why I’ve included the leopard flat here. It also adds interest to the outfit. The leopard could be substituted easily with a black loafer. Two coat options for winter. Both are long, providing extra coverage and warmth. The gray coat is a lightweight option for milder days and can also be used to elevate any casual look.

  1. Gray Coat JCrew  //  Rack
  2. Black Puffer Coat Abercrombie  //  Rack
  3. Leopard Flat  //  Option 2
  4. White Sneaker  //  Option 2
  5. Black Ankle Boot  //  Option 2
  6. Camel Boot  //  Option 2
